Directed, co-written and co-starring cult auteur Shinya Tsukamoto (Tetsuo: The Iron Man 1989), Kotoko is a powerfully immersive and often-terrifying portrait of a single mother straddling a nervous breakdown. Conceived by J-Pop star Cocco, who gives an enthralling performance in the lead role, the film follows young woman Kotoko struggling to look after her infant child. As her mental state deteriorates, she is plagued by visions of doubles, unable to tell who is real and who is a nightmarish concoction. Finding herself romantically pursued by a celebrity author (played by Tsukamoto), violent outbursts she had repressed begin to bubble to the surface. Captured with beautifully harsh digital cinematography, Kotoko is a confronting dive into the psyche of its protagonist and one of Tsukamoto's boldest achievements as a director.
Please note: this film contains impactful violence and suicide themes.
