Charlie Chaplin's first true talkie was the bold political satire The Great Dictator, a scathing excoriation of Adolf Hitler produced amid his reign of terror. Chaplin inhabits dual roles of a humble Jewish barber (playing on his iconic Little Tramp persona) and the vicious dictator of Tomainia, Adenoid Hynkel, whose identical appearances eventually cause their paths to cross in unexpected ways. One of the first major American productions to parody Hitler, the film was a massive hit upon its release and is widely regarded as one of Chaplin's premier achievements, with his final monologue among his most celebrated screen moments.
