John Ford directs this witty black comedy that plays on the tough guy persona of classic Hollywood gangster Edward G Robinson. In the film, Robinson plays both the meek account Arthur Ferguson Jones and his doppelganger 'Killer' Mannion, a cruel crook causing havoc around town. With Mannion's picture in every newspaper, Ferguson's life — as well as his burgeoning romance with colleague Wilhelmina Clark (Jean Arthur) — starts to fall apart. Robinson both plays against type and leans into his iconic image in the lead roles, while Ford utilises clever special effects and visual ingenuity to bring the two characters together in this charming caper.
