About
Charles Burnett’s third feature is a simmering drama where the line between everyday life and the supernatural grows ever-blurred.
When Gideon (Paul Butler) and Suzie’s (Mary Alice) old friend from the South, Harry Mention (Danny Glover) appears out of the blue into their comfortable South Central Los Angeles family home, his genial yet sinister presence throws their lives and relationships into disarray.
As the mercurial Harry Mention, Glover gives a smoldering performances that plays on Southern folklore's wily trickster figure, transposed into the modern day. Drawing on the clash between Hoodoo, Christianity, and the long-lasting impact of slavery on future generations, To Sleep with Anger deftly teases out the complex strands of contemporary middle-class Black life.
